On Assignment: Retail Architecture Photography – Place Viau Supercentre

Earlier this year, I was contacted by First Capital Realty to create a series of the Place Viau Supercentre located in St-Leonard on the Montreal island. This shopping centre was built in 2014 and designed by the Montreal based architecture firm MSDL.

For this specific project, the client requested that the images delivered follow a format with a ratio of roughly 2:1. It was also important for the photos to be lively and feature cars and/or people. Finally, the focus had to be on major retailers.

For the overall shots, I wanted to include a fair amount of traffic in the photos and used a slower shutter speed to give the images a more dynamic look. I used a Tamron 24-70mm G2 for these two shots as it was impossible to stand in the middle of the road with a tripod.

Another important part of the assignment was to capture the artwork present in front of the centre. Client provided some staff to add a human element to the shots. A 24mm Tilt Shift was the best option for these specific photos.

Then I closed the assignment with a few additional shots making sure to include people and traffic as much as possible.
